Job purpose

The African Court was established by Article 1 of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Establishment of an African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, adopted on 9 June 1998 and entered into force on 25 January 2004. . It is the first continental judicial body charged with the responsibility of ensuring the protection of human and peoples' rights. The court started its operation in 2006 and is based in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania.

main functions

Responsible for interpretation at court hearings and meetings as well as for translation of court documents from English or French into Portuguese.

specific responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Registrar of the Court, and under the direct supervision of the Deputy Registrar, the Interpreter/Translator - Portuguese will perform the following duties and responsibilities:

a. Provide correct, clear and truthful interpretation from English or French into Portuguese during court hearings and meetings using standardized, clear and accurate language;

B. Translate documents correctly, primarily from English or French into Portuguese, while ensuring the highest level of accuracy, preserving the spirit, context, quality, technical language and nuances of the original, using accurate, clear and appropriate terminology;

To do this work, the interpreter/interpreter (Portuguese) must:


checking appropriate references to ensure accurate understanding and use of AU technical terminology;


Consulting colleagues, authors of texts, specialized technical dictionaries/dictionaries, data banks…;

Keeping abreast of developments in the field of language, in both source and target languages, by compiling and updating terms, phrases, dictionaries, acronyms and special expressions and updating them regularly in order to expand the vocabulary stock with the aim of enhancing skills and ability;

Assist in the development of AU terms/lexicons;

Provide consecutive translation, when required, during audiences and statements at conferences, meetings, debates, etc.;

c. Perform any other duty that may be assigned.


Academic requirements and relevant experience


Applicants must have:


Educational qualification

University degree in languages, humanities, or related disciplines

Professional qualification from a recognized school of interpreters/translators.

work experience

At least eight (8) years of relevant progressive experience in interpretation and translation.

Experience working with legal documents is highly desirable.

Appointment Duration:

The appointment will be made on a regular contract for a period of three (3) years, the first twelve months of which is a probationary period. Thereafter, the contract will be for two years, renewable, subject to satisfactory performance and achievements.

Compensation:

An indicative base salary of $42,879.00 per annum (Grade P4, Step 1) plus other related entitlements, eg. Post adjustment (42% of base salary), housing allowance ($1,860.00 per month), education allowance (100% of school fees max. $10,000.00 per child per year for up to four children max 21 years old) Spouse Allowance (5% of base salary), Child Allowance (US$250 per year per child up to four children up to 21 years of age maximum), etc. as per the rules and regulations governing international civil servants of the African Union.
